Letter from LDA-IA President Patty Beyer – Fall 2024

October is a month dedicated to raising awareness about learning disabilities, but it’s also a time to celebrate the extraordinary diversity and resilience of our students.

I often think of students who faced challenges in some areas yet excelled in others. The student who struggled with classroom focus but thrived in hands-on mechanical tasks and became a skilled auto mechanic. The student who found creative writing difficult but excelled in the concrete fields of science and math and earned a doctorate degree. The student with dyslexia who leveraged athletic and artistic talents into a successful career as a wind tower technician.

These individuals, and countless others like them, have shown remarkable determination and perseverance in overcoming their weaknesses while never losing sight of their unique strengths. Their success stories inspire us all.

As parents, teachers and caregivers we strive to remove barriers to success and create environments that foster the growth and development of students with learning disabilities. By providing children with tools, strategies and accommodations to overcome challenges, fostering a growth mindset emphasizing that learning is a process and setbacks are opportunities for growth, seeking out resources to help students succeed and teaching students to communicate their needs and advocate for themselves, we can empower these students to reach their full potential.

Throughout the year, but especially during October, let’s take a moment to commend the people we know with learning disabilities for their hard work and resilience in navigating a system that is not always friendly to their unique strengths. Let’s also acknowledge and appreciate the efforts we’ve made to create a more inclusive and supportive learning community for all. Together, we can continue to foster a space where every student feels valued and empowered to succeed.
