LDA of Iowa's Parenting Guide: Part One, Section 2
Topic 2: Why is Effective Parenting Important?
KEY POINTS:
Effective parents build the foundation that their children need to be successful adults.
Parents who take the time to gain the knowledge to build a strong and a positive relationship between themselves and their children increase the possibility that “their children will have a higher rate of success in their schooling at all levels, have higher graduation rates, less teenage pregnancy, better mental and physical health, more careers with higher levels of pay, and work behaviors rated much higher by employers and limited contact with the police or other legal services.”10
An effective parent’s goal is to raise children who are responsible, confident, and empathetic individuals who can contribute positively to society because you will not just provide basic needs for your children, but you will be nurturing their emotional, social and intellectual development. Good parenting enables children to grow into healthy, productive and compassionate adults.
What children learn by observing and modeling their parent’s behavior will not only influence him/her in the future but will have an impact on hundreds of people during the child’s lifetime.
